NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

He most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan ƒƒ‚‚ as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and costarred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, 'You're crazy,' my parents were like, 'Come on, you have to eat.'"

When I heard you were the first person I thought of :( This is so incredibly sad.

My mouth actually dropped open when I saw the headline. I called my younger sis who is a big Heath fan.She thought I was messing with her. Seeing him in the new Batman film will be a bit morbid now.

*UPDATE* CNN Headline News just stated that filming has wrapped on Batman.

I was so looking forward to his performance in that, Rex. The trailers looked so cool. Heath always went at a role 110%. It's going to be a bit sad and morbid to me now.

I'm beyond overwhelmed ... I had been so busy today that I hadn't even logged onto bbc or cnn to check the news.

He was one of my own ... an Aussie -- this is such a huge loss for all of Australia -- and the world.

I'm pissed off by some of the LJ posts I've been seeing and I've had to show great restraint in commenting ...

Thanks for your post, MarkyMark.

It was definately a huge loss for the world, Bryce. Heath was a young actor that I really adored. I loved his spirit and the way he came at his roles. He went into each one 110%, no apologies. I think he was a much bigger actor than he got credit for.

(There were negative posts? I can't imagine that.)

It was such a shock to read about this! The world has lost a talented actor and beautiful person. :'-(

You said it, Glenn. It just desn't seem real. I hope we find out soon what exactly happened. He was waiting for a massage. I know I had read that he was taking things to relax and to sleep due to his role as the Joker...prescribed medicines. Because he was so into his role, he would get so keyed up he couldn't sleep.

It is sad and a loss..I'm kind of stunned. Right now, is the first I have read of it.

I'm not big on actors, but I knew of Heath Ledger. He was a talented cutie and the fact that I could recognize and remember him, when I can never recognize and remember actors, gave me a sense of comforting familiarity with him. So I adore him. I was totally shocked to see a news article about his death. It just sort... feels so unreal, you know? It'll feel even more unreal when I see him in the new Batman movie. Man. :/

I was really looking forward to his performance in Batman...now it will be a little sad to see him. He was such a talented actor,IMO. A sweet guy too, from his interviews. So so sad.

It really is...no matter how many replies I answer, it just doesn't seem real. It's so very sad.

This is dreadful. Utterly awful.

I saw a reputably sourced article that said he may have had pneumonia... that alone may have killed him.
Mark: guy Dean TEARboywondermark on January 23rd, 2008 01:33 am (UTC)
Just a tragedy...a horrible tragedy. We've lost a dear person and talented artist and a baby has lost her daddy.

This is not just the death of a great actor, although it was that.
His performance in "Brokeback" was one of the most beautiful and touching I have ever seen on film. Watching him at Ennis gradually rise from his pain and silence into a passionate love affair with Jack made him my friend. I know now I have lost a good friend who, without being aware of it, understood and loved me. Your lovely photo of him as a radiant youth will remain with me for a long time and will help me to overcome some of my own loss, my own pain. Thank you for it.

Heath was brilliant in Brokeback,as I believe he was in al of his films...he had such heart and such talent. I love that pic of Heath cause he seems so happy and alive.
Dale T. GreatOne: Brokeback Mountaindgreatone on January 23rd, 2008 04:28 am (UTC)

Heard about his death late but it was still a shock! Only 28.

I think he finished the latest Batman movie so we could possibly see him one last time.
Mark: guy Heathboywondermark on January 24th, 2008 07:12 pm (UTC)
It was a huge shock to me, Dale. The filming to the Batman movie was all wrapped up so his performance in that was completed. I was really looking forward to that...now it will be a bit sad, y'know?

Unfortunately, it's true, Phil. I wish it were a hoax. When I pulled up Yahoo on Tuesday and saw that headline, I was floored! I read it three times. I'm not enjoying some of the reports from the media where these reporters are throwing in their opinions. Ugh. Once you die...everyone has an opinion.

I know ! I saw that last night on Yahoo ! I couldn't believe it !

I think that's how most people feel...stunned, disbelief...it's just hard to register!

I am still stunned. I was going to bed after a long day and was too stunned to go to bed! I've spent two hours working this through my mind and making an entry in my journal! (Please feel free to say something there)

I will miss this man so much.

I've actually cried, even though I never knew him...

I've liked Heath ever since I saw him on the series ROAR, many years ago. He was one of my favorite actors and seemed an all around sweet guy. So sad.
