Earthquakes in Maryland?!
3 Micro Earthquakes Hit Maryland

UPDATED: 2:20 pm EST February 23, 2005

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado has confirmed that the Baltimore area experienced three "seismic events" Wednesday morning.
The USGS said the events -- called micro earthquakes -- were first detected around 9:22 a.m.

The agency said the first quake was centered between Jacobsville and Pasadena in Anne Arundel County and measured approximately magnitude 2 on the Richter scale. A map on the USGS Web site had originally pinpointed the epicenter of the micro earthquake in the middle of Chesapeake Bay.
Later, experts confirmed a second small earthquake in Maryland.

Geologist James Reger at the Maryland Geological Survey said it was detected at 11:01 a.m. in eastern Charles County. He said the quake did not appear to be as big as the magnitude 2 quake that was detected 90 minutes earlier.

Seismic monitoring equipment at the Maryland Geological Survey measured a third small quake moments after noon.

(LOL...I know that this is no big deal to you Californians, but it's unheard of here! I felt the first one...it was a loud rumbling...very strange!)

On earthquakes, be careful. I know a teensy bit about them, and frankly, there's nothing stopping one from happening on the East Coast. Just have a flashlight handy and you should be fine. =)

That wasn't an earthquake - it was just Art Modell with indigestion.

Man, earthquakes are a way of life. I absolutely adore them. If I don't live in an Earthquake-y place when I move out, I'll die. :P
Mark: Brainiac5boywondermark on February 25th, 2005 04:56 pm (UTC)
You adore them, Andy?! Even the building crumbling, bridge tearing ones?

Re: "Weeee!!"
Earthquakes are fun! (not!)

I lived thru the Nisqually quake we had here four years ago Monday ... it is nuts.

Ours was a 6.8, and it was over 30mi underground and over 30mi south of Seattle, and it did a ton of damage. Felt like a bad carnival ride.

*shudder*

Re: "Weeee!!"
Hahahaha...knowing how Marylanders react to the least bit of snow, we'd be screaming "Armageddon!" if a 6.8 hit here!
