The Master of Magnetism...

MAGNETO: The Movie? Believe it! Variety has just announced that 20th Century Fox has hired Sheldon Turner (The Longest Yard, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville Horror) to write the screenplay for a spin-off film involving the X-Men villain mutant known as Magneto!

MAGNETO joins WOLVERINE in the films which will spin-off from the popular X-MEN franchise! Though producers are not officially set up for the film, it is rumored to be X-MEN producers, Avi Arad and Lauren Shuler-Donner.

The history of Magneto in the films depicted him first as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis. According to Variety, that is the period in which the new film will take place. Considering this, it seems unlikely that Magneto actor, Sir Ian McKellen will return for the role, as the film will depict Magneto around his earlier life as a young man.

The storyline will heavily involve Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart in the films). That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war, and while they bond over the realization that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies.

"I pitched a film that is almost 'The Pianist' meets 'X-Men,' about a guy who, after watching his family slaughtered, has an awakening of his powers and seeks revenge," said screenwriter, Turner.
Stay tuned for further info on this project, as news develops!

But...

they were very good friends for a long time. It was a difference of experience that put them on opposing sides, and they never really WERE enemies... not in the traditional sense anyways.

True, Dan! I hope that was just the way the writer of the article was seeing it! I always saw them more as opponents than enemies! There is a strong friendship at the core of the relationship between Xavier and Magneto...I think the first two films kept true to that, so I'm hoping that the Magneto movie will too!

That's right, they were very good friends and worked together in the beginning. They grew apart on the issue of mutant/human relations. They are definitely better described as opponents rather than enemies.

Cool, I'm gonna need that. I work with people who have their heads up their asses at both jobs, so I may need a handful of those.

Funny Jason and I were just talking about what they were going to do, because they said they were only going to make one more X-Men movie, which does break my heart!!!
Mark: Angelboywondermark on December 14th, 2004 10:01 am (UTC)
NONO...this is a seperate movie from Xmen 3!
monetrenee on December 14th, 2004 10:07 am (UTC)
I realize that, but we were wondering if they were going to do others, make way for the younger X-Men or whatever. I guess I didn't express myself clearly.

Have you heard any possible storylines for the Wolverine movie? (I haven't come across anything.)
Mark: Daneboywondermark on December 14th, 2004 12:20 pm (UTC)
I thought it was going to follow the whole Weapon-X storyline! Not positive though!

www.comics2film.com is a good place to check.

that would be just too weird if they ended the the 2nd with the phenix and then don't do it. in fact they cant its just stupid. they would be better off not doing a 3rd at all if they didn't.
Mark: Daneboywondermark on December 14th, 2004 06:16 pm (UTC)
I can't imagine that happening, Den! I hope not!
